National Coverage

Austria's vignette-based toll system covers approximately 2,200 kilometres of motorways and expressways managed by ASFINAG. This network connects all major Austrian cities and provides key transit routes between Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

The vignette is required on all roads designated as Autobahn (A) or Schnellstraße (S) unless a specific exemption applies. National roads (Bundesstraße B) and regional roads (Landesstraße L) do not require a vignette.

Regional Nuances by Federal State

Vienna (Wien)

The A23 (Südosttangente) and A22 (Donauuferautobahn) are key urban motorways. The vignette is required. Note that the A23 is heavily congested during peak hours — plan accordingly.

Lower Austria (Niederösterreich)

Major routes include the A1 (Westautobahn) and A2 (Südautobahn). The A1 is Austria's busiest motorway. No special tolls in this region beyond the standard vignette.

Salzburg

The A1 and A10 (Tauern Motorway) pass through Salzburg. The A10 includes the Tauern Tunnel special toll section. The city of Salzburg itself has an environmental zone — check current restrictions.

Tyrol (Tirol)

The A12 (Inntal Motorway) and A13 (Brenner Motorway) are the main routes. The A13 requires a separate distance-based toll in addition to the vignette. Night driving restrictions apply on the A12 for heavy vehicles.

Vorarlberg

The S16 (Arlberg Expressway) connects Vorarlberg to Tyrol via the Arlberg Tunnel, which requires a separate tunnel toll. The A14 (Rheintal Motorway) is standard vignette only.

Carinthia (Kärnten)

The A2 (Südautobahn) and A11 (Karawanken Motorway) serve Carinthia. The A11 includes the Karawanken Tunnel toll at the Slovenian border. The A10 Tauern section also applies here.

Styria (Steiermark)

The A2 and A9 (Pyhrn Motorway) are key routes. The A9 includes the Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnel tolls. Graz has an environmental zone with emission-based entry restrictions.

Upper Austria (Oberösterreich)

The A1, A7, A8, and A9 serve Upper Austria. No special tolls beyond the standard vignette in most of this region. Linz is a major logistics hub with heavy traffic on the A1.
