Information & Guidance Service

VignetteDrive Austria provides a structured, multi-channel information service covering every aspect of the Austrian motorway vignette. Our service is designed for European drivers who need reliable, plain-language guidance without having to navigate complex official documentation.

Our core service areas include: vignette type selection, purchase channel comparison, digital vignette registration guidance, special toll route identification, enforcement and penalty information, and complaint handling procedures.

All information is provided free of charge. We do not require registration or payment to access any content on this website. Our goal is to reduce the number of inadvertent vignette violations by European travellers through better pre-journey information.

Digital Vignette: Complete Guide

The digital vignette (Digitale Vignette) was introduced by ASFINAG as a paperless alternative to the traditional windscreen sticker. It is linked to your vehicle's licence plate number and is enforced through automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras at motorway entry points.

Purchase Online

Visit the official ASFINAG website or use the ASFINAG app. Select your vehicle category, validity period, and enter your licence plate number exactly as it appears on your registration document.

Choose Start Date

You can purchase up to 18 days in advance. The vignette becomes active on your chosen start date at 00:00 CET. You cannot backdate a digital vignette.

Receive Confirmation

A confirmation email is sent immediately. Save this email as proof of purchase. The vignette is registered in ASFINAG's database within minutes.

Drive — No Sticker Needed

Your licence plate is automatically read by ANPR cameras. No windscreen sticker is required. Ensure your plates are clean and clearly legible.

Cancellation Window

If you need to cancel, you may do so within 18 days of purchase, provided the start date has not yet been reached. Contact ASFINAG customer services directly.

Physical Vignette Sticker: Correct Application

The physical vignette sticker must be applied correctly to be valid. Incorrect placement is treated the same as having no vignette by enforcement officers.

Correct Placement Rules

  • Must be affixed to the inside of the windscreen (not the outside)
  • Position: top-left corner of the windscreen from the driver's perspective
  • The sticker must be fully intact — do not cut or fold it
  • The sticker is self-destructing if removed — it cannot be transferred to another vehicle
  • Do not cover the sticker with any other material (tinting film, etc.)
  • The sticker must be clearly visible from outside the vehicle

Special Toll Routes: Beyond the Vignette

The standard vignette does not cover all toll roads in Austria. Several high-cost infrastructure routes require an additional special toll (Sondermaut) on top of a valid vignette.

Boundaries & Exceptions

  1. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes: Not covered by the vignette system. Must use the GO-Maut electronic toll system.
  2. Special toll routes: Brenner, Arlberg, Karawanken, Tauern, and Pyhrn tunnels require additional payment regardless of vignette validity.
  3. Diplomatic immunity: Vehicles with CD plates are exempt from the vignette requirement under the Vienna Convention.
  4. Emergency services: Police, fire brigade, and ambulance vehicles are exempt during operational use.
  5. ASFINAG maintenance vehicles: Vehicles engaged in official motorway maintenance are exempt.
  6. Temporary exemptions: ASFINAG may grant temporary exemptions for specific events or road closures — check official announcements.
  7. Rental vehicles: The renter is responsible for ensuring a valid vignette is present. Confirm with the rental company before departure.
  8. Vignette validity overlap: The annual vignette for the new year becomes valid from 1 December of the previous year. Both old and new annual vignettes may be valid simultaneously during December–January.
  9. Non-motorway roads: National roads (B-roads) and regional roads do not require a vignette.
